The brief stated the need for a 7-storey mix-use development, located in a prominent site in Barry Island, Friars Point. The design consists of a multi-faceted system which helped to illustrate the different uses for the building. Blue rustic brick represents the creative work spaces and workshops on the ground floor with offices on the first floor, whilst showing appreciation for the slate and industrial background of the site. Above consists of apartments, represented by the minimalist black cladding with a hint of modernism and luxury expressed by the gold cladding detail of the balconies.
My dissertation focused on Sustainable and Ecological Design, this motivated many of the decisions for this project. The main notable case study is BedZED, which helped inspire the use of Sun Spaces, considered a form of passive solar heating. Solar panels were placed on the extensive green roofs and intensive green roofs were incorporated for the garden terraces, this helped to connect the environment within the design of the building as a form of symbiotic bio-integration.
I carefully considered the surrounding environment, assuring the design was sympathetic to the site. The external amphitheatre-like staircases are not only for aesthetics – they conform to the topography of the site and allows access from the lowest point, to the desired ground level. This solution also helps add a communal, open seating area for the residents to appreciate the coastal views and natural beauty of the site.

Canolbwyntiodd fy nhraethawd estynedig ar Ddylunio Cynaliadwy ac Ecolegol, bu hyn yn symbyliad i lawer o’r penderfyniadau ar gyfer y prosiect hwn. Y prif achos nodedig yw BedZED, a helpodd i ysbrydoli’r defnydd o Ofodau Haul, yr ystyrir eu bod yn ffurf ar wresogi solar goddefol. Gosodwyd paneli solar ar y toeon gwyrdd helaeth ac ymgorfforwyd toeon gwyrdd dwys ar gyfer y terasau gardd, helpodd hyn i gysylltu’r amgylchedd o fewn dyluniad yr adeilad fel ffurf ar fio-integreiddio symbiotig.
Ystyriais yr amgylchedd o gwmpas yn ofalus, gan sicrhau bod y dyluniad yn gweddu i’r safle. Nid at ddiben estheteg yn unig y mae’r grisiau allanol yn null amffitheatr – maent yn cydymffurfio i dopograffeg y safle ac yn galluogi mynediad o’r pwynt isaf i’r lefel llawr gwaelod a ddymunir. Mae’r datrysiad hwn yn helpu wrth ychwanegu ardal seddau cymunedol agored er mwyn i’r trigolion werthfawrogi’r golygfeydd arfordirol a phrydferthwch naturiol y safle.
