Olivia Thomas

BA (Hons) Artist Designer Maker

My aim is to produce designs that are beautiful, informative and functional. I wanted to create work that not only looks aesthetically pleasing but is also scientifically informative, to create designs that can ‘shed light’ into the world of the unseen. In the world, we live in us as makers and designers need to think about the environmental impacts of our work and what purpose they have.

My main skill set and strength is in glass and small metals, both of which are used in the creation of my light fixtures. Each disc of glass has been in the kiln twice, once for fusing the glass together and the second to add the coloured frit to create the various patterns to create the ‘diseases’. All the colours that are seen on the pieces of glass are small individual pieces of glass, which have been individually placed to reconstruct the diseases onto each disc of glass. When the light is on, the colours and patterns flood the surrounding space.

The results of these processes are beautiful light fixtures that not only have a contemporary feel but are also informative and have meaning to them. I want viewers to share in my interest of the unseen world of science that exists around us at all times. To think about the invisible world around us.

Fy nod yw cynhyrchu dyluniadau sy’n hardd, sy’n rhoi gwybodaeth ac sy’n ddefnyddiol. Roeddwn am greu gwaith a oedd nid yn unig yn boddhau yn esthetig pan fyddai rhywun yn edrych arno ond a fyddai hefyd yn rhoi gwybodaeth yn wyddonol, i gael creu dyluniadau a fydd yn taflu goleuni i fyd yr hyn nas gwelir. Yn y byd rydym yn byw ynddo, mae angen i ninnau fel gwneuthurwyr a dylunwyr feddwl am effeithiau amgylcheddol ein gwaith a beth yw eu diben.

Mae fy mhrif sgiliau a’m cryfderau mewn gwydr a metelau bach, a chaiff y ddau eu defnyddio i greu fy ffitiadau golau. Cafodd pob disg gwydr eu rhoi yn yr odyn ddwywaith, unwaith i’r disgiau gael ymdoddi a’r ail waith i gael ychwanegu’r ffrit lliw er mwyn creu’r gwahanol batrymau i greu’r ‘clwyfau’. Mae pob un o’r lliwiau a welir ar y darnau o wydr yn fân ddarnau unigol o wydr a gafodd eu rhoi’n unigol i gael ail-greu’r clwyfau ar bob disg gwydr. Pan fydd y golau ymlaen, bydd y lliwiau a’r patrymau yn llenwi’r gofod o amgylch.

Mae’r prosesau hyn yn creu ffitiadau golau hyfryd sydd nid yn unig ag iddyn nhw wedd gyfoes, ond sydd hefyd yn cyfleu gwybodaeth ac mae ystyr iddyn nhw. Rwyf am i’r gwyliwr rannu yn fy niddordeb yn y byd gwyddonol nas gwelir sy’n bodoli o’n cwmpas drwy’r amser; i feddwl am y byd anweledig sydd o’n cwmpas.
