It’s All Narrative

This series of work is inspired by Staffordshire Flatbacks which typically depict stories. I play with the composition of the traditional slip cast replicas to give the pieces a new story. Narrative is key. The aim is to evoke the imagination of the audience, influencing them to create their own narratives.

The clay itself often dictates the tales displayed. Segments of the model tend to tear away due to the delicate nature of the raw material. This helps my experimental building process. I play with the relationships of the characters as well as with scale, humour and symbolism to create imaginative realms giving the traditional Flatbacks a contemporary spin.
