The assignment brief required the design of a 7 storey multi-use building, which would be located at Friars Point, Barry Island. Level 0 and 1 of the building had to be a mix of workshops, offices and apartments, while the Level 2 to 6 was a mixture of one- and two-bedroom apartments. The site location is unique because it is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), so it was an important requirement to take full advantage of what the site and views around have to offer by using the elements the environment provides to create sustainability.

The wellbeing of the environment is tremendously important to me. Therefore, to be presented with an assignment brief that required to design a building that is sustainable was a great chance for me to explore different ways on what features and products to use. I was able to use products such as Vanersanden ECO-friendly Brick Slips to Rainwater Harvesters to re-use filtered rainwater to be used for certain features in the building.

The site and building have been designed so that impacts on the environment are kept to a minimal, while still aiming to improve the environment for the residents and wildlife in the local area. The vegetation that is planted on the ground of the site will provide habitations and food for wildlife, as well as connecting residents and visitors with nature and refining their healthiness and welfare.

Gofynnodd brîff y dyluniad am ddylunio adeilad 7 llawr amlddefnydd, i’w leolir ar Friars Point, Ynys y Barri. Bu’n rhaid i lefelau 0 ac 1 yr adeilad fod yn gymysgedd o weithdai, swyddfeydd a fflatiau, a lefelau 2 i 6 yn gymysgedd o fflatiau un a dwy ystafell wely. Mae lleoliad y safle’n unigryw oherwydd ei fod yn Safleoedd o Ddiddordeb Gwyddonol Arbennig (SoDdGA), felly bu’n ofyniad pwysig i fanteisio i’r llawn ar yr hyn sydd gan y safle a’r golygfeydd o’i gwmpas i’w gynnig trwy ddefnyddio elfennau’r amgylchedd i greu cynaladwyedd.

Mae llesiant yr amgylched yn andros o bwysig i mi. Felly, roedd cael fy nghyflwyno gyda brîff dylunio fu’n gofyn am ddylunio adeilad cynaliadwy yn gyfle mawr i mi ymchwilio i ddulliau gwahanol a pha nodweddion a chynnyrch i’w defnyddio. Roeddwn yn gallu defnyddio cynnyrch fel slipiau brics Vanersanden sy’n llesol i’r amgylchedd ac offer casglu dŵr glaw sy’n ailddefnyddio dŵr glaw wedi’i hidlo ar gyfer nodweddion penodol yr adeilad.

Dyluniwyd y safle a’r adeilad fel bod yr effeithiau ar yr amgylchedd yn cael eu cadw mor fach â phosib, wrth anelu ar yr un pryd at wella’r amgylchedd i’r trigolion a’r bywyd gwyllt yn yr ardal leol. Bydd y llystyfiant a blannir ar ddaear y safle’n darparu cynefinoedd a bwyd ar gyfer bywyd gwyllt, yn ogystal â chysylltu trigolion ac ymwelwyr â natur a mireinio eu hiechyd a llesiant.
