Rebecca Oldfield

BA (Hons) Artist Designer Maker

My primary inspiration is found within the materials themselves, I have always been fascinated by the earth and appreciate that the planets resources are my medium; from the crystals and gemstones I set and embed to the precious metals I encase them in. Every fragment I use in my work is of equal importance and each possess their own beauty; which I explore through the pieces that I make.

In order to create my pieces, I amalgamate traditional and modern techniques; fusing metalwork, handicraft, computer aided design and digital production techniques. My collections are inspired through a process of material exploration and experimentation, styles and trends from the past, forms of architectural skylines and industrial structures, intricate and kinetic mechanisms predominantly clockwork and found organic objects.

My pieces are predominantly made with polished or oxidised silver and are either kept smooth or are textured, by means of milling or reticulation. I embellish my pieces with either crushed crystals, faceted gemstones or non-precious materials. The handcrafted element to my work ensures that no two pieces are ever identical. I recycle materials where possible by means of casting and granulation methods, all diamonds and precious gemstones used in my work are ethically sourced and my designs created in precious metals comply with the British hallmarking regulations.

Mae fy ysbrydoliaeth fwyaf yn y deunyddiau eu hunain, mae’r ddaear wedi fy nghyfareddu erioed ac rwy’n gwerthfawrogi mai adnoddau’r blaned yw fy nghyfrwng; o’r grisialau a’r cerrig gwerthfawr y byddaf yn eu gosod hyd y metelau drudfawr fydd yn eu dal. Mae pob eitem a ddefnyddiaf yn fy ngwaith yr un mor bwysig â’i gilydd ac mae ei harddwch ei hun gan bob un ohonynt, a byddaf yn archwilio hyn drwy’r darnau y byddaf yn eu gwneud.

Er mwyn creu fy narnau, byddaf yn cyfuno technegau traddodiadol a modern, technegau megis gwaith metel, crefft llaw, dylunio drwy gymorth cyfrifiadur, a chynhyrchu digidol. Mae fy nghasgliadau wedi’u hysbrydoli drwy broses o archwilio ac arbrofi gyda’r deunyddiau, steiliau a thueddiadau o’r gorffennol, ffurf bensaernïol y gorwel ac adeiladau diwydiannol, mecanweithiau cymhleth a chinetig (clociau yn bennaf) a gwrthrychau organig rwyf wedi dod ar eu traws.

Gwneir fy narnau yn bennaf ag arian wedi’i sgleinio neu wedi’i ocsideiddio a chân nhw eu cadw’n llyfn neu eu gweadeddu drwy felino neu rwydo. Rwy’n addurno fy narnau naill ai â grisialau wedi’u malu, cerrig gwerthfawr ffasedaidd neu ddeunyddiau nad ydynt yn ddrudfawr. Mae’r elfen grefftio â llaw yn fy ngwaith yn sicrhau na fydd unrhyw ddau ddarn byth yr un. Rwy’n ailgylchu deunyddiau hyd y gallaf drwy ddulliau gronynnu neu gastio. Daw pob diemwnt a charreg werthfawr a ddefnyddir yn fy ngwaith o ffynonellau moesegol ac mae fy nyluniadau mewn metelau drudfawr yn cydymffurfio â rheoliadau dilysnodi Prydain.
