Spiro Performing Arts Centre

A personal interest in contemporary circus provoked me to interpret the brief as I did and to come up with this playful design for a circus performing arts centre. Throughout the entire design process, I made decisions in favour of sustainability, from the materials and construction methods chosen, through to the services installed within the building itself.

I drew inspiration from a number of sources, including well-known Welsh buildings such as the WISE building at the Centre of Alternative Technology for its rammed earth wall and use of hempcrete, and the National Assembly for Wales building for its thoughtful design for means of natural ventilation.

The current push to consider ‘alternative’ construction methods and materials into the mainstream, as well as a love for good design got me interested in undertaking the course in the first place. This I hope is reflected within the final project on display
