I believe that the objects we own should, and can, provide us with more than their function and pure visual pleasure. Through ownership and use, objects should provide a level of emotional fulfilment and enrichment of daily life. This notion is something often overlooked in our capitalist society.

Considering how Scandinavian designers have allowed their regional roots in craft to influence their products, has allowed me to bring a more humanised approach to the traditional functional objects I make. Rather than viewing craft and design as disconnected, I see them as in a harmonious relationship, a relationship which can produce beautiful, innovative products that provide the user with comfort as well as function.

This body of work is designed to be a visual representation of my exploration of the relationship and balance between craft and design, with the Scandinavian design ethos in mind. By combining aesthetics and processes associated with either design or craft, I have attempted to create a body of work that demonstrates a positive collaboration between craft and design. I hope these pieces will provide the user with the afore mentioned sense of emotional fulfilment and enrichment of daily life.

Rwy’n credu y gall, ac y dylai, y gwrthrychau rydym yn berchen arnynt gynnig mwy i ni na’u swyddogaeth a phleser gweledol pur. Drwy fod yn berchen arnynt a’u defnyddio dylai gwrthrychau gynnig lefel o foddhad emosiynol a chyfoethogi ein bywyd bob dydd. Mae’r syniad hwn yn rhywbeth a gaiff ei anwybyddu’n aml yn ein cymdeithas gyfalafol.

Mae ystyried sut gwnaeth ddylunwyr o Sgandinafia ganiatáu i’w gwreiddiau rhanbarthol o ran crefft ddylanwadu ar eu cynhyrchion, wedi caniatáu i mi ddod â dull mwy gwâr i’r gwrthrychau defnyddiol traddodiadol rwy’n eu gwneud. Yn hytrach na gweld crefft a dylunio yn ddau beth datgysylltiedig, rwy’n eu gweld lle maen nhw’n gytun â’i gilydd mewn perthynas sy’n gallu cynhyrchu cynhyrchion hardd, arloesol a fydd yn dod â chysur yn ogystal â defnydd i’r defnyddiwr.

Mae’r corff hwn o waith wedi’i ddylunio i gynrychioli’n weledol fy archwiliad i’r berthynas a’r cydbwysedd rhwng crefft a dylunio â’r ethos dylunio Sgandinafaidd mewn golwg. Rwyf wedi ceisio creu corff o waith sy’n dangos cydweithredu positif rhwng crefft a dylunio. Gobeithio y bydd y darnau hyn yn rhoi’r ymdeimlad o foddhad emosiynol i’r defnyddiwr a’i fod wedi’i gyfoethogi, gan gofio’r sylwadau a wnaed uchod.
