Ty Cwyr art centre

Ty Cwyr, an inspiring new waterside art centre designed for a vacant site located on Britannia Quay , Cardiff Bay. The design is inspired by the concept of art itself, what is the true meaning of art and art in its natural form. Honeycomb was the chosen natural form used throughout the design. The form and structure of the building is unique to the project, with a steel framing system designed to accomodate the shape. The spaces within the structure are designed to be functional and inspiring to users, promoting the commitment of all types of art including dance, physical sculpturing and painting, theatre and many more. The honeycomb ‘pods’ are accessible at some levels to the public containing ‘pull up an aisle’ spaces for unique private spaces for the public. The building was designed using passive solar and sustainable technologies to achieve a function self sustaining building with minimum impact on the environment. Ty Cwyr will include various facilities including an adjustable, rotatable theatre space, a large gallery space which has adjustable partitions to suit the displaying arts, a large space suitable for a dance studio and arts class room. The exterior of the facade is bold but all honeycomb pods are leveled whereas the internal pods are produding at different levels into the building. The coloured glass also creates an inspiring internal environment, whereas the internal design is industrial. Ty Cwyr means ‘Wax House’ in Welsh and is complimentary to the design concept.
