My work explores the practice of painting in the digital age, challenging how abstract painting can be pursed when this narrative – as a consequence of technology – can be faked or non-assignable. Compositions are informed by digitally manipulated imagery and methods that ask the viewer to engage with and question the marks made on the surface.

Multiple painterly techniques and a diverse matter of materials are entwined to produce imagery that asks us to appreciate the real layers within painting in a time when we are confronted and consumed by the ruling of screens, as painting has a new urgency and purpose in providing a space away from them.

There is a particular focus on the contemporary artists relationship to the digital world whereby style, methods and ideas from any era are now free for sampling and reenactment. The painted surface has become a realm in which paintings traditions and approaches are reinterpreted and paintings metaphysical questions on subjects as originality, subjectivity and spiritual transcendence are being tested.

Mae fy ngwaith yn ystyried yr ymarfer o baentio yn yr oes ddigidol, yn herio’r modd y gellir paentio yn haniaethol pan all – o ganlyniad i dechnoleg – gael ei ffugio neu na ellir ei briodoli. Defnyddir delweddau sy’n cael eu trin yn ddigidol yn y gwaith a dulliau sy’n gofyn i’r gwyliwr ystyried a chwestiynu’r marciau a wneir ar yr arwyneb.

Plethir amryfal dechnegau peintwrus â mater amrywiol o ddeunyddiau i greu delweddau sy’n gofyn i ni werthfawrogi gwir haenau’r peintiad ar adeg pan fo sgriniau yn ein hwynebu a’n llethu mae gan ddarluniau bwrpas newydd a brys i ddarparu mangre sy’n rhydd oddi wrthyn nhw.

Mae ffocws arbennig ar berthynas artistiaid cyfoed â’r byd digidol lle mae arddull, dulliau a syniadau o unrhyw oed yn awr yn rhydd ar gyfer eu samplu a’i hail-greu. Mae’r arwyneb paentiedig wedi datblygu’n faes lle mae traddodiadau a dulliau arlunio yn cael eu hail-ddehongli a chwestiynau metaffisegol peintiadau ar bynciau megis gwreiddioldeb, goddrychedd a rhagoriaeth ysbrydol yn cael eu profi.

I have recently been exploring ideas related to the home and memory, and how they form identity. I am interested in how to defy the imperative to follow a linear structure in personal narrative and instead look for a more honest depiction of memory, which is itself...
