I am exploring female empowerment and identity within the black and mixed-raced community, using digital media to create bold and colourful images that are designed to bring joy and strength to its audiences. The work reflects on representation of the black and mixed-race community in the British media, responding to blackface, prejudice and racism using images to empower and uplift. Deploying bold, bright colours the pieces aim to provide a rising feeling of strength and support. Several of the figures are lacking eyes, allowing the audience to better visualises themselves in the work and draw inspiration and motivation from it.

The themes are personal to me as a mixed raced woman living in the age of social media, with information and advertising being broadcast on every digital device. In a world connected via small screens, it is impossible to hide from apparent racial bias within much social media, tv and film content. By exploring representation within social media, tv and film, I draw on my own experiences to highlight issues and provide imagery that can be educational and inspiring.

Rwy’n archwilio grymuso menywod a hunaniaeth yn y gymuned bobl dduon a hil gymysg, gan ddefnyddio cyfryngau digidol i greu lliwiau cryf a lliwgar sydd wedi’u cynllunio i ddod â llawenydd a chryfder i’w cynulleidfaoedd. Mae’r gwaith yn myfyrio ar gynrychiolaeth y gymuned bobl dduon a hil gymysg yn y cyfryngau ym Mhrydain, gan ymateb i wynebau duon, rhagfarn a hiliaeth gan ddefnyddio lluniau i rymuso a dyrchafu. Trwy ddefnyddio lliwiau cryf a llachar mae’r darnau’n ceisio darparu teimlad dyrchafol o gryfder a chefnogaeth. Nid oes gan sawl un o’r ffigurau lygaid, sy’n galluogi’r gynulleidfa i weld eu hunain yn y gwaith a chael ysbrydoliaeth a chymhelliant ohono.

Mae’r themâu’n bersonol i fi fel menyw hil gymysg sy’n byw yn oes y cyfryngau cymdeithasol, gyda gwybodaeth a hysbysebion yn cael eu darlledu ar bob dyfais ddigidol. Mewn byd sydd wedi’i gysylltu drwy sgriniau bach, mae’n amhosibl cuddio o ragfarn hiliol amlwg mewn llawer o’r cynnwys a welir ar y cyfryngau cymdeithasol, teledu a ffilm. Drwy archwilio cynrychiolaeth o fewn y cyfryngau cymdeithasol, teledu a ffilm, rwy’n tynnu ar fy mhrofiadau fy hun i dynnu sylw at broblemau a darparu lluniau sy’n gallu bod yn addysgiadol ac ysbrydoledig.
