BSc (Hons) Architectural Design & Technology

As part of my assignment, I have been tasked with designing a hotel. The site, located in Cardiff Bay, offers great potential in terms of views as it overlooks the bay itself . The hotel shall accommodate a maximum of 240 guests across 8 storeys of accommodation. The first two floors hold all ancillary accommodation in the form of a double height podium, and includes a terrace for the restaurant, café and bar to take advantage of the view over the bay. The building has been designed to reflect the history of the docks itself, with Cardiff, at one point being the world’s largest exporter of coal in the world. To achieve this the building has been encased in a steel frame to mimic the coal hoists that were once prevalent throughout the area during the late 1800s and early 1900s. The external finishes of the building include limestone and locally sourced Welsh slate in the form of a rainscreen cladding. The building consists of a reinforced concrete frame, selected for its robustness and environmental advantages. Photovoltaic panels and air source heat pumps are provided on the roof to help with a greener solution to energy and heating demands of the building. Car Parking has been provided for all potential residents and a water stop is proposed nearby.

Fel rhan o fy aseiniad, gofynnwyd i mi ddylunio gwesty. Mae’r safle, sydd wedi’i leoli ym Mae Caerdydd, yn cynnig potensial arbennig o safbwynt golygfeydd am ei fod yn edrych dros y bae ei hun. Ar y ddau lawr cyntaf mae’r cyfleusterau atodol yn cynnwys podiwm uchder dwbl, gyda theras ar gyfer y bwyty, caffi a bar i fanteisio ar yr olygfa dros y bae. Cynlluniwyd yr adeilad i adlewyrchu hanes ardal y dociau, gan mai Caerdydd, ar un adeg oedd allforiwr glo mwyaf y byd. Er mwyn cyflawni hyn mae’r adeilad wedi’i orchuddio â ffrâm ddur i ddynwared y teclynnau codi glo oedd yn amlwg ledled yr ardal ar un adeg ar ddiwedd yr 1800au a dechrau’r 1900au. Mae gorffeniad allanol yr adeilad yn cynnwys calch a llechi Cymreig ar ffurf cladio sgrin law. Mae’r adeilad yn cynnwys ffrâm goncrid wedi’i hatgyfnerthu, a ddewiswyd ar sail ei hirhoedledd a’i manteision amgylcheddol. Defnyddiwyd paneli ffotofoltäig a phympiau gwres ffynhonnell aer ar y to fel ateb gwyrddach i ofynion gwresogi ac ynni’r adeilad. Darparwyd maes parcio ar gyfer yr holl ddefnyddwyr posibl ac argymhellir arhosfan ddŵr gerllaw.
