‘The birth of the reader must be ransomed by the death of the author’
– Roland Barthes
I’m interested in Authorship over artwork and feel that by pushing a portrait to the point it is unrecognisable I have protected my authorship over the work by keeping the concept a secret. ‘The birth of the reader must be ransomed by the death of the author’ (Roland Barthes) When a person as a reaction to a piece of work they then become the author of that reaction. I do not title my pieces or give too much away in the hope that each viewer will see something different in each painting. That way I will always keep authorship over my own concept and leave the viewer free to become the author of their own reaction.
