Beryl Rattray

BA (Hons) Artist Designer Maker

I am a maker of wearable textiles and jewellery known as B by the Sea, I use fabrics which are produced ethically and in sympathy with the environment. I like to source locally and produce fabrics myself by spinning weaving and felting, where possible.

In my jewellery it is important to me to use found/salvaged items. I take pleasure in using traditional skills and material knowledge to transform waste into quality items. I feel as well that ethically it is important to understand where materials originate. As a society we are encouraged to go global, but I feel it is more important to understand how our resources and materials affect both countries and communities. I work with suppliers that fit with my environmental ethos.

All dyes used on my fabrics are natural to reduce harmful chemicals, where possible these are grown at home or on an allotment. My textile, glass, wood and metal skills enable me to give each piece an individual signature.

Rwy’n grëwr tecstilau a gemwaith i’w gwisgo y mai eu henw yw B by the Sea, rwy’n defnyddio ffabrigau a gynhyrchir yn foesegol ac mewn cytgord â’r amgylchedd. Rwy’n hoffi defnyddio ffynonellau lleol a chynhyrchu ffabrigau fy hun trwy nyddu, gwau a ffeltio, pan fo’n bosib.

Yn fy ngemwaith mae’n bwysig i mi i ddefnyddio eitemau y daethpwyd o hyd iddynt/wedi’u hachub. Rwy’n ymhyfrydu mewn defnyddio sgiliau traddodiadol a gwybodaeth am ddeunyddiau i drawsnewid gwastraff i eitemau o safon. Rwy’n teimlo hefyd ei fod yn bwysig yn foesegol i ddeall o ble mae deunyddiau’n dod. Fel cymdeithas fe’n hanogir i fynd yn fyd-eang, ac rwy’n teimlo ei fod yn bwysicach i ddeall sut mae ein hadnoddau a deunyddiau’n effeithio ar wledydd a chymunedau fel ei gilydd. Rwy’n gweithio gyda chyflenwyr sy’n gweddu i fy ethos amgylcheddol.

Mae’r holl liwiau a ddefnyddir ar fy ffabrigau’n naturiol er mwyn lleihau cemegolion niweidiol, pan fo’n bosib tyfir y rhain gartref neu ar randir. Mae fy sgiliau gyda thecstilau, gwydr, pren a metel yn fy ngalluogi i roi arwyddnod unigol i bob darn.
