BA (Hons) Artist Designer Maker

I believe that it is important for designers to have a strong knowledge of their materials and processes for successful design. I design with the intent of broadening my skill and knowledge through intricately challenging pieces that embody a traditional eastern element in a modern western aesthetic, informed through careful researching into both fields.

My designs are narrated through my material tests and drawings, creating detailed work that has been carefully laminated, adding contrast to the traditionally inspired patterns. From my wooden colour palette to the marquetry, I bring a modern twist to these classic geometric shapes, usually found in ancient Chinese window frames and doors.

The use of play with the geometric shapes used in Chinese architecture gives a reinterpreted and mathematical approach to the prints seen on each of my own pieces. This playful element is also seen in my lamination of turned table legs- giving an illusionary aspect to their form.

My collection consists of bespoke furniture pieces with a finely designed craft work aesthetic rarely seen in modern objects. I aim to give the viewer an alternative to contemporary furniture, showing how an exploration into varying cultural designs can inform our own aesthetic values, creating classically informed, contemporary furniture.

Yn fy marn i mae’n bwysig bod gwybodaeth gryf gan ddylunwyr am eu deunyddiau a’r prosesau er mwyn dylunio’n llwyddiannus. Rwy’n dylunio â’r bwriad o ehangu fy sgiliau a’m gwybodaeth drwy ddarnau heriol, cymhleth a fydd yn cynnwys elfen draddodiadol o’r dwyrain mewn esthetig gorllewinol cyfoes a fydd wedi’i oleuo drwy ymchwilio’n ofalus i’r ddau faes.

Gellir gweld stori fy nyluniadau drwy fy mhrofion deunyddiau a’m lluniau, sy’n creu gwaith manwl wedi’i lamineiddio’n ofalus, gan ychwanegu cyferbyniad i’r patrymau sydd wedi’u hysbrydoli gan rai traddodiadol. O’m palet lliw pren hyd at yr argaenwaith, byddaf yn dod ag elfen gyfoes i’r siapiau geometrig clasurol hyn sydd i’w gweld fel arfer mewn fframiau ffenestri a drysau hynafol Tsieineaidd.

Mae chwarae gyda’r siapiau geometrig a ddefnyddir mewn pensaernïaeth Tsieineaidd yn rhoi gwedd fathemategol ac un fydd wedi’i ail-ddehongli yn y printiau sydd i’w gweld ar bob un o’m darnau. Mae’r elfen chwareus hon i’w gweld yn fy ngwaith yn lamineiddio coesau byrddau sy’n rhoi elfen rithiol i’w ffurf.

Mae fy nghasgliad yn cynnwys darnau o gelfi penodol gydag esthetig o grefftwaith wedi’i ddylunio’n gain nas gwelir yn aml mewn darnau modern. Fy mwriad yw rhoi dewis arall i’r gwyliwr yn ogystal â chelfi cyfoes, gan ddangos sut gall archwilio i wahanol ddyluniadau diwylliannol oleuo ein gwerthoedd esthetig ni ein hunain, gan greu celfi cyfoes sy’n seiliedig ar y clasurol.
