I Lay my Heart in The East and my Feet in The West

‘I Lay my Heart in The East and my Feet in The West’ explores visually the duality of English and Indian cultures and how this vibrant vocabulary echoes the artist’s heritage. The work delivers a joyful visualisation of how the multifaceted world around us influences our individuality.

Notions of self-identity are expressed through the juxtaposition of elaborate and decorative deconstructed fabrics and embroidery. These are wholesomely grounded on to the more serene backing of the artist’s interpretation of quilting, a universal female craft endeavour.

Ambiguous imagery of the female figure weaves its way into the life of both cultural personalities. There is a growing sense of the importance the artist feels about domestic objects and their ability to offer comfort, and allow an acceptance of both the unconscious self and tangible host that is the body. After all, variety is the spice of life.
