Fit for Repurpose

As a designer my research sources and inspirations are in sustainable fashion. Now, more than ever, we have to save our planet and be ethically aware. My design focus is on relevant innovation, by using waste textiles that are consuming our earth. With an emphasis on creating products from existing textiles resources, it has never been so important to the future of the fashion industry; designers of the future need to be ethically aware and design with sustainability at the forefront of the design process.

My influences and research inspiration sources for my graduate collection is 100% recycled with the focus on the three R’s; RE-CYLE, RE-USE, RE-MAKE. My collection is made from waterproof materials used in the outer body of discarded tents from festivals and holiday campers. The designs reuse the functional features and attributes of the tent, for example ties, ropes, zips, eyelets D rings etc. These components are key details with the new garment’s features. Each garment is designed directly from the tents, manipulating the large pieces around the dress stand, creatively cutting the existing tent features to guide the design process, and achieve the garment shapes organically directly on the dress stand.

Glastonbury 2020 was the main inspiration for this collection, with it being the 50th anniversary, it was the perfect opportunity to look back at inspirational stories of the last 50 years and everything they are doing to be environmentally conscious at each festival. This influenced my colour palette, textile prints, artwork and unique embroidery to embellish designs on top of the fabrics. Influenced by the global maps of travellers to the festival, places and people who would have owned these re-used tents, leaving their DNA and marks inherent in the fabrics, it gives my collection that authenticity with each garment being an individual, unique piece with a story to tell.

Mae fy nylanwadau a ffynonellau ysbrydoliaeth ymchwil ar gyfer fy nghasgliad graddedig wedi’i ailgylchu 100% gyda’r ffocws ar y tri A; AILGYLCHU, AILDDEFNYDDIO, AIL-GREU. Mae fy nghasgliad wedi’i greu o ddeunyddiau diddos a ddefnyddir yn haen allanol pebyll a daflwyd gan wersyllwyr gwyliau. Mae’r dyluniadau’n ailddefnyddio nodweddion a rhinweddau gweithredol y babell, er enghraifft, clymau, rhaffau, sipiau, llygadennau, modrwyon-D etc. Mae’r cydrannau hyn yn fanylion allweddol gyda nodweddion y dilledyn newydd. Dylunnir pob dilledyn yn uniongyrchol o’r pebyll, gan drin a thrafod y darnau mawr o gwmpas y teclyn dylunio, torri nodweddion y babell wreiddiol yn greadigol i arwain y broses ddylunio a chyflawni siapiau’r dilledyn mewn ffordd organig yn uniongyrchol ar y teclyn dylunio.

Glastonbury 2020 oedd y brif ysbrydoliaeth ar gyfer y casgliad hwn gan mai dyma ei ben-blwydd yn 50 oed, dyma’r cyfle perffaith i edrych yn ôl ar storïau llawn ysbrydoliaeth o’r 50 mlynedd ddiwethaf a phopeth y maent yn ei wneud i fod yn ymwybodol o’r amgylchedd ym mhob gŵyl. Dylanwadodd hyn ar fy mhalet lliwiau, printiau tecstil, gwaith celf a brodwaith unigryw i addurno patrymau ar ben y ffabrigau. Wedi’i ddylanwadu gan y mapiau byd-eang o deithwyr i’r ŵyl, lleoedd a phobl y byddent wedi perchen ar y pebyll a ailddefnyddir hyn, gan adael eu DNA a’u marciau’n rhan annatod o’r ffabrigau, mae’n rhoi naws unigryw i fy nghasgliad gan fod pob dilledyn yn ddarn unigol ac unigryw sydd â stori i’w hadrodd.
