A Miner’s Darkness

Join me on a journey where I explore the different aspects of mining in South Wales.

As a Fine Art student, you are encouraged to embark on your tasks with creativity and self-expression. Throughout my years at University I have been able to convey my emotions within my work by connecting to the topic at hand. I led an exploration into the lives of miners and the environments they have to work within. Throughout this exploration I had begun to gain a close relationship to the topic, finding relevance within other artists’ work and my own personal history and cultural heritage. This gave me an opportunity to add my own twist on the topic allowing me to connect to the artwork and the subject, where I will also engage the reader into some of the senses that miners experience. Examples of this are the loud sounds of working miners, pick axes smashing the ground, the intense smell of dirt and sulphur or the visually dark pit with only a dot of light in the distance. The senses that will immerse, allows the viewer themselves to reach out and touch, giving similar experiences to that of the miners.

I have recently been exploring ideas related to the home and memory, and how they form identity. I am interested in how to defy the imperative to follow a linear structure in personal narrative and instead look for a more honest depiction of memory, which is itself...
