Masked Movement

Anonymity is a curious thing, with a dazzling effect. We don a mask and become invincible. We cover our face but naturally compensate with exaggerated gestures, communicating meaning through movement and imagery. My work is a seamless blend of the whimsical and uncanny, with a green conscience. Watching these effects, that a large scale object or fully animated costume can have on an audience fuels my practice. Costume, performance, puppetry and up-cycling are my passions, and have long been the focus for my practice. My love for masks has developed since observing the effect they have on both the wearer and the viewer. The mask conceals our physical identity, but masks arent deception, nor are they a normal truth. Instead they point to a surreal truth. Surreal truth is like the truth we find in dreams. Our dreams tell us something about our deepest feelings and philosophical interpretations. Masks give us a similar truth that the images in dreams do. Ive used this theory as inspiration using imagery from my own dreams for the designs of this project, as an inward exploration of my subconscious. This project delves into this ability of the mask to explore our inner selves and unapologetically, outwardly express true identity.

Symudiad Mygydog

Mae anhysbyrwydd yn rhywbeth cywrain, gyda effaith ddisglair. Rydym yn rhoi mwgwd ymlaen ac yn mynd yn anorchfygol. Rydym yn gorchuddio ein hwynebau ond yn cyflenwi am hynny’n naturiol trwy ormodedd o ystumiau, gan gyfathrebu ystyr trwy symudiad a delweddau. Mae fy ngwaith yn gymysgedd di-dor o’r mympwyol a’r hynod, gyda chydwybod gwyrdd. Mae gwylio’r effeithiau y gall gwrthrych graddfa lawn neu wisg a animeiddir yn llawn eu cael ar fy nghynulleidfa’n tanio fy arfer. Gwisgoedd, perfformio, pypedwaith a gwellgylchu yw fy angerdd ac maent wedi bod yn ffocws fy arfer ers tro. Mae fy nghariad at fygydau wedi datblygu ers arsylwi’r effaith y maent yn ei chael ar y gwisgwr a’r gwyliwr. Mae’r mwgwd yn cuddio ein hunaniaeth gorfforol, ond nid yw mygydau’n dwyll, nac yn wirionedd arferol ychwaith. Yn hytrach maent yn pwyntio tuag at wirionedd swreal. Mae gwirionedd swreal fel y gwirionedd a welwch mewn breuddwydion. Mae ein breuddwydion yn dweud rhywbeth wrthym am ein teimladau dyfnaf a dehongliadau athronyddol. Mae mygydau’n rhoi gwirionedd sy’n debyg i’r hyn gan ddelweddau mewn breuddwydion. Rwyf wedi defnyddio’r ddamcaniaeth hon fel ysbrydoliaeth gan ddefnyddio delweddaeth o fy mreuddwydion fy hun ar gyfer dyluniadau’r prosiect hwn, fel ymchwiliad mewnol i fy isymwybod. Mae’r prosiect hwn yn cloddio i allu’r mwgwd i ymchwilio i’n hunain mewnol ac yn mynegi gwir hunaniaeth yn allanol a heb ymddiheuriad.
Wedi’i greu o bapurau newydd wedi’u hailgylchi a phebyll wedi’u gwellgylchu
