BA (Hons) Fine Art

Developing an interest in digital photography, I explored the themes of women and empowerment in my work, inspired by artists such as Helmut Newton. My work focused on the way women are portrayed in the media and in pornography. Inspired my the social issue of Revenge Porn (when sexually explicit media is shared online without consent from the pictured individual). I created work that reflected the notions of empowered women.

Running a full time fashion blog has had a strong creative impact on my work. My final pieces demonstrates the influence of fashion photography, where I directed my models to pose in a more elegant and tasteful manner as opposed to the distasteful manner of soft pornography, such as found in page three of The Sun newspaper. By creating a survey, I asked women for their opinions about the representation of women in today’s society, taking their responses into account when creating the final images.

Photography has allowed me to capture the emotion of the subject of Revenge Porn, an important issue that I felt needed to be raised to the public. The pornographic signals of Helmut Newton’s work demonstrates the ability to photograph women in a sexual but not derogatory way, and I hope that this is shown within my work.

Using the skills I have gained from my time at university, I hope to have a career in fashion photography, using my artistic knowledge to develop my own style as an artist and fashion blogger.

I have recently been exploring ideas related to the home and memory, and how they form identity. I am interested in how to defy the imperative to follow a linear structure in personal narrative and instead look for a more honest depiction of memory, which is itself...
