This piece is a multifunctional folding screen and plant storage shelf. It can be used either as a standard folding screen with bars with which to hang plant pots off of or, as a shelving unit by folding three hinged pieces of one screen panel down to create shelves. The materials used are oak and rattan cane, both of which were chosen for their sustainability. The oak used is re-claimed wood and rattan is considered sustainable due to the plant’s fast growing nature. Caning, the technique used to weave the flat rattan cane into a sheet, is also on the Heritage Crafts red list of endangered crafts, with no new furniture being made using the technique in the UK. I want to keep this age-old technique alive by using it to make modern sustainable furniture.

Mae’r darn hwn yn sgrîn blygu amlbwrpas ac yn silff storio planhigion. Gellir ei ddefnyddio naill ai fel sgrîn blygu safonol gyda bariau i hongian potiau planhigion arnynt, neu fel uned silffoedd trwy blygu tri darn colfachog o un panel sgrîn i greu silffoedd. Y deunyddiau a ddefnyddir yw derw a gwiail cors, y dewiswyd y ddau ohonynt ar gyfer eu cynaladwyedd. Mae’r derw a ddefnyddir yn bren adferedig ac ystyrir bod cors yn gynaliadwy oherwydd natur tyfu’n gyflym y planhigyn. Mae gwialenodi, y dechneg a ddefnyddir i wehyddu’r gwiail cors gwastad mewn dalen, hefyd ar y rhestr goch Crefftau Treftadaeth o grefftau dan fygythiad, ac nid oes unrhyw ddodrefn newydd yn cael ei wneud yn y DU gan ddefnyddio’r dechneg. Rwyf eisiau cadw’r dechneg hynafol yn fyw trwy ei defnyddio i wneud dodrefn fodern gynaliadwy.
