BA (Hons) Interior Design

To me, design is about working with others to find solutions to their problems. It is only by getting onto someone else’s level and experiencing their journey and needs can one create an experience that doesn’t make assumptions. It is how we use design as a tool to create an environment that makes the user feel a certain type of way. I believe good design is a product of compassionate behavior. I personally believe that the building regulations in the UK are out-dated due to a number of disabilities not being taken into consideration, therefore, I feel it is important that as the new generation of designers we need to take accountability for creating spaces that accommodate everyone whilst allowing them to thrive in a setting that is helping them achieve their fullest potential. Having wrote my thesis on the affects Interior design has on the behavior of children with autism, as well as using this new knowledge in my final major project I learnt a remarkable amount on how the environment around us can affect us in ways we never thought possible. Designing aesthetically pleasing spaces is only a small portion of a designer’s role and I am excited to continue learning and experiencing new ways in which design can be used as a tool for better experiences.

I mi, mae dylunio’n ymwneud â gweithio gydag eraill i ddod o hyd i atebion i’w problemau. Dim ond drwy fynd ar lefel rhywun arall a phrofi eu taith a’u hanghenion y gall rhywun greu profiad nad yw’n gwneud rhagdybiaethau. Dyma sut rydym ni’n defnyddio dylunio fel adnodd i greu amgylchedd sy’n gwneud i’r defnyddiwr deimlo mewn ffordd arbennig. Rwy’n credu bod dylunio da yn gynnyrch ymddygiad tosturiol. Yn bersonol rwy’n credu bod y rheoliadau adeiladu yn y DU wedi dyddio oherwydd nad yw nifer o anableddau’n cael eu hystyried, felly, rwy’n teimlo ei bod hi’n bwysig ein bod ni, fel y genhedlaeth newydd o ddylunwyr, yn ysgwyddo atebolrwydd am greu gofodau sy’n addas i bawb tra’n caniatáu iddynt ffynnu mewn lleoliad sy’n eu helpu i gyflawni eu potensial llawnaf. Ar ôl ysgrifennu fy thesis ar yr effeithiau y mae dylunio mewnol yn eu cael ar ymddygiad plant ag awtistiaeth, yn ogystal â defnyddio’r wybodaeth newydd hon yn fy mhrosiect mawr terfynol, dysgais beth wmbredd ynghylch sut y gall yr amgylchedd o’n cwmpas effeithio arnom mewn ffyrdd nad oeddem erioed wedi meddwl oedd yn bosib. Dim ond cyfran fach o rôl dylunydd yw dylunio gofodau sy’n ddymunol yn esthetig ac rwy’n gyffrous i barhau i ddysgu a phrofi ffyrdd newydd o ddefnyddio dylunio fel adnodd i greu profiadau gwell.

Unlike some, I cannot say that I always knew Interior Design was the route I was destined to go down. While I have always had a keen eye and a strong love for artistic design, for me, designing a space seemed like more of a hobby rather than a job that I could pursue...

I’m not one for grand philosophical ideas through design that will ultimately end up being someones living or work space. As a designer all I really aspire to do is create something that is of value to the person using that bit of design whether it’s a space or a...

The intrigue within me in relation to creating inclusive dimensions derives from being well travelled and primarily being in close contact with disabled children. In 2015 I volunteered for an organisation called Allsorts in Stroud, aiming to provide fun activities for...
