Using both visual and lexical storytelling, I explore African history and culture while investigating its absence in the learning of young black students. Growing up in the UK, I became aware that the black history being taught in schools did not go beyond slavery, the generational trauma of racism and the dehumanisation of black people. These are important topics that need to be taught however branding pain and suffering as the entirety of black history creates an unconscious bias within black students, therefore causing them to feel inferior to their white counterparts.

Additionally, only teaching about slavery and the struggles of African people suggests that black history begins at the point of colonialism which is incorrect. The Eurocentric curriculum is something I aim to deconstruct because it reinforces the sense of not belonging.

My parents told me and my siblings stories from our Ivorian heritage that their parents had passed down to them and they also taught us about our culture and spiritual customs. This made me proud of culture and reduced the feeling of inferiority.

I want to share the beauty of African heritage through myths and culture so that people can not only learn but also appreciate it from a non Eurocentric perspective.

Gan ddefnyddio adrodd straeon gweledol a geirfaol, rwy’n archwilio hanes a diwylliant Affricanaidd tra’n ymchwilio i’w habsenoldeb wrth ddysgu myfyrwyr du ifanc. Wrth dyfu i fyny yn y DU, fe ddes i’n ymwybodol nad oedd yr hanes du a oedd yn cael ei addysgu mewn ysgolion yn mynd y tu hwnt i gaethwasiaeth, trawma hiliaeth drwy genedlaethau a dad-ddyneiddio pobl dduon. Mae’r rhain yn bynciau pwysig y mae angen eu haddysgu, fodd bynnag, mae brandio poen a dioddefaint fel hanes du yn ei gyfanrwydd yn creu rhagfarn ddiarwybod mewn myfyrwyr du, gan achosi iddyn nhw deimlo’n israddol i’w cymheiriaid gwyn.

Yn ogystal, mae addysgu am gaethwasiaeth a brwydrau pobl Affricanaidd yn unig yn awgrymu bod hanes pobl dduon yn dechrau ar bwynt eu gwladychu, sy’n anghywir. Mae’r cwricwlwm Ewrocentrig yn rhywbeth rwy’n ceisio ei ddadadeiladu gan ei fod yn atgyfnerthu’r ymdeimlad o beidio â pherthyn.

Adroddodd fy rhieni straeon wrthyf fi a’m brodyr a’m chwiorydd am ein treftadaeth Iforiaidd yr oedd eu rhieni wedi eu trosglwyddo iddyn nhw ac fe wnaethon nhw ein haddysgu ni am ein diwylliant a’n harferion ysbrydol hefyd. Roedd hyn yn fy ngwneud yn falch o ddiwylliant ac yn lleihau’r teimlad o israddoldeb.

Rydw i am rannu harddwch treftadaeth Affricanaidd drwy fythau a diwylliant fel y gall pobl nid yn unig ddysgu amdano ond ei werthfawrogi o safbwynt nad yw’n Ewrocentrig hefyd.
