The Pant y Celyn Tablecloth

My work focuses on people-centred projects and my pieces explore how new materials and technology can help people express themselves. I work with live briefs so each project has a different set of needs. This work is the outcome of a Participatory Art project with a group of residents aged 65-86 who live in sheltered living in Newport, Wales.

As a first step, I led two workshops and the residents made their own individual pieces of textile work. The table is the central focus of activity be it for coffee morning, pudding club or the place for social interaction so my idea was to create an interactive tablecloth that captured the atmosphere of this collective. I took the participants textile pieces and used them as touch sensitive triggers for music and conversation.
