The Heritage Coast

Most people adhere to the normal format of photographic albums to record passing memories. As an art practitioner my initial idea did not begin with the said album but with a number of holiday postcards. This progressed into an ongoing record of place and the work stands as a comparison to the traditional form of photographic album.

My practice has led me to investigate layers of geology, history and memory currently focusing on an area of the Glamorgan Heritage coastline, more specifically areas of the coastal path from Llantwit Major to Porthcawl. My investigations have been brought about by the means of walking throughout this area and studying rock formations, vistas and the strata which reveal fossilised evidence of the heritage coast from the Cambrian period to the present day. In conjunction with exploration of the area I accessed the NMW’ collection of fossils relating to this area.

The work is predominantly process based and involves, amongst other things, a number of printing methods, namely, mono-printing, lithography and etching.

My interest in this specific subject matter dates back to research into the artist Peter Lanyon and his approach to landscape painting and developed through attending talks given by landscape artists Jeremy Gardiner and David Tress.
