Annette Lindenberg

BA (Hons) Artist Designer Maker

I believe that we can investigate culture, the environment, our impact on it and our own subconscious through design and making. It therefore follows that the objects we create not only embody our ideals and tastes, but provide insight into what we desire and why.

Through the media of wood and ceramic, my project explores how my experiences in Austria have impacted my designing processes, while research into Japanese design and making culture has simultaneously expanded my material knowledge. My approach to making is both critical and intuitive, centering around a close relationship between my subconscious design decisions and the deliberate imposition of material intention. I explore new contexts for my research through trans-disciplinary making, incorporating furniture inspired by Japanese ceramics and minimalist Austrian woodwork.

Through the dissection of these two opposing cultures, their design values and what these offer me as a maker, I have created a series of objects with the help of tools that mimic aspects of myself. Using these to create reinterpreted traditional tea bowls transitioning a classic into a new realm of design that is true to me, the maker, while still appearing classic in form to the viewer.

Rwy’n credu y gallwn ymchwilio i ddiwylliant, i’r amgylchedd, i’n heffaith ni arno ac i’n his-ymwybod ninnau drwy ddylunio a gwneud. Bydd yn dilyn, felly, bod y pethau y byddwn yn eu creu nid yn unig yn cynnwys ein delfrydau a’n chwaeth, ond bydd yn rhoi mewnwelediad i’r pethau rydym am eu cael a pham.

Drwy gyfrwng pren a cheramig, mae fy mhrosiect yn archwilio sut mae fy mhrofiadau yn Awstria wedi effeithio ar fy mhrosesau dylunio, ac mae ymchwil i ddiwylliant dylunio a gwneud yn Japan wedi ehangu fy ngwybodaeth am ddeunyddiau ar yr un pryd. Mae fy ffordd o fynd ati i wneud yn feirniadol ac yn reddfol, yn troi o gwmpas perthynas agos rhwng y penderfyniadau dylunio sy’n dod o’m his-ymwybod a’r gosod bwriadol ar y deunydd. Rwy’n archwilio cyd-destunau newydd ar gyfer fy ymchwil drwy wneud traws-ddisgyblaethol, gan gyfuno celfi wedi’u hysbrydoli gan gerameg Japan â gwaith pren minimalaidd Awstria.

Drwy rannu’r ddau ddiwylliant cyferbyniol hyn, eu gwerthoedd dylunio a’r hyn mae’r rhain yn ei gynnig i mi, y gwneuthurwr, rwyf wedi creu cyfres o wrthrychau â chymorth offer a fydd yn dynwared agweddau arnaf i fy hunan; gan ddefnyddio’r rhain i greu powlenni te traddodiadol, gan droi rhywbeth clasurol i faes dylunio newydd sy’n fy adlewyrchu i, y gwneuthurwr, yn gywir gan barhau i ymddangos i’r gwyliwr yn glasurol o ran ei ffurf.
