Chloe Monks

BA (Hons) Ceramics

I start my creative journey by identifying outlines of shapes and forms within my surroundings. I have a growing interest in the impact an object can have in a particular space in relation to our mind and body. This has inevitably led to questioning the definition of an object once the scale has been increased.

This exhibition of work explores the capacity of sculpture to create space and ergonomically alter our encounter and orientation, to redirect the beginning and end of space or create a space that is never ending.

Existing ideas such as maps and routes inspired my work at first, creating extruded work that was easy and quick. The scale and colour now encourage an embodied encounter, a physical movement and tacit experience, as components forge new pathways. The work ultimately seeks to encourage a sense of personal freedom by affecting our curiosity and playfulness.
