I am endeavouring to explore the space between extremes – the ambiguous middle ground between contrasting elements, but not their extreme versions. I am not interested in a singular, central ideal, instead, I consider a series of sliding scales, somewhere along which my work sits. Inspired by the non-representational forms found in minimalism, I have deconstructed the rigid, ordered form of the grid, and re-constructed it out of pliable materials, playing with the boundaries between order and chaos, rigidity and fluidity, surface and sculpture. Taking inspiration from the works of Eva Hesse and Karla Black, I aim to utilize the natural qualities of materials, but reject artificial colour and excessive contortion or manipulation. I want the materials to be distinguishable and absent from representational connotations. I use white to act as a neutral tone which accentuates the texture of the materials, while hinting at the conventions of the white gallery space. I primarily work with textiles and other soft materials, which crease and drape, creating forms which are intentionally ambiguous. I have used scale to bring authority to these minimal forms, integrating them into a space in such a way as to allow the viewer to walk among them, subsequently creating a relationship between the work and the viewer.

Rwy’n ceisio archwilio’r gofod sydd rhwng eithafion – y tir canol amwys rhwng elfennau cyferbyniol, ond nid eu fersiynau eithafol. Does dim diddordeb gen i mewn un ddelfryd ganolog, yn hytrach byddaf yn ystyried cyfres o raddfeydd symudol y bydd fy ngwaith yn rhywle arnynt. Mae’r ffurfiau anghynrychiadol a geir mewn minimaliaeth wedi fy ysbrydoli ac rwyf wedi dadadeiladu ffurf anhyblyg, drefnedig y grid a’i ail-adeiladu o ddeunyddiau hyblyg gan chwarae ar ffiniau rhwng trefn ac anhrefn llwyr, rhwng anhyblygrwydd a llifedd, rhwng arwyneb a cherflun. A gwaith Eva Hesse a Karla Black yn fy ysbrydoli, rwy’n bwriadu defnyddio priodweddau naturiol deunyddiau, ond yn gwrthod lliw artiffisial a thrafod a gwyrdroi gormodol. Rwyf am i bobl fod yn gallu gwahaniaethu rhwng y deunyddiau a bod heb arwyddocaon cynrychiadol. Byddaf yn defnyddio gwyn yn arlliw niwtral sy’n pwysleisio gweadedd y deunyddiau, gan awgrymu’n ysgafn gonfensiynau gofod gwyn yr oriel. Byddaf yn gweithio’n bennaf gyda thecstilau a deunyddiau meddal eraill, a fydd yn crychu ac yn hongian yn llaes gan greu ffurfiau sy’n fwriadol amwys. Rwyf wedi defnyddio graddfa i roi awdurdod i’r ffurfiau minimal hyn gan eu hintegreiddio i ofod mewn modd a fydd yn galluogi’r gwyliwr i gerdded yn eu plith, gan greu yn sgil hynny berthynas rhwng y gwaith a’r gwyliwr.

My artwork was initially inspired by the rave scene which is usually an intense environment of music, colour and lights. I decided to recreate the feelings that my experience evoked, with the use of illuminative acrylics and spray paints on canvas. As spray painting...

Our species has become increasingly disconnected from nature. I focus on landscapes of personal significance and/or landscapes that have been disrupted by industrial use. Materials from these sites (often rocks, muds, and bricks) are used through a process-orientated...

Non-linear narratives such as unreliable memories, leaky dreams and deja vu are a central reference within my practice. I address the structure of these forms of narrative using repetition, replication and iterations of time. My work is largely sculptural, using...

Exploring the fragmentation of memory through the physicality of found objects and the spoken word, my work has become an archive of my family history. Due to the archival nature of my work, I replicate ways of preserving my objects through the attentiveness of their...

In my current practice I am concerned with the objectivity and phenomenology of colour. Through using media such as light and coloured acetate, my present work is intentionally focused and uncluttered, allowing colour to be considered as a singularity without any...

With a love for colour my work addresses form and shape and the impact this has on a space. I am demonstrating how the use of bright colour can create maximum optical impact. I’m interested in pattern and repetition to create a visual aesthetic whilst whilst working...
