Experienced fine dining: bridging the divide between ceramics and the senses

The activity of fine dining is an inherently sensorial experience and with the relationship between customers, food, and ceramic constantly changing, restaurants across the world strive to tap into this sensory engagement. The vessels these creations adorn can often become forgotten, yet they provide a canvas for our food. By focusing on a diners sensorium the ceramic can help to form a successful and cohesive dish, creating a theatrical experience for a consumer. Ultimately enhancing a sensual dining environment. I am inspired by the relationship between the senses of sight and touch, marrying that with a process of ceramic design.

I begin in two-dimensions, designing through programs such as; SketchUp, Rhino, and Photoshop. I create a number of designs, which in turn provide an individual insight into future outcomes. Once designs have been created two-dimensionally my process evolves to the practical, and the medium of plaster. I start on the lathe, turning forms from cylindrical blocks, I then use a number of methods to create moulds, which when completed can produce multiples of form. This results in a cohesive outcome that is accomplished, aesthetic, and sensual. Whilst throughout, combining modern digital processes with a physical connection to the handmade.

Gan fwyhau amgylchedd ciniawa synhwyraidd yn y pen draw. Rwyf wedi fy ysbrydoli gan y berthynas rhwng synhwyrau golwg a chyffyrddiad, gan uno hynny â phroses dylunio cerameg.

Rwy’n dechrau mewn dau ddimensiwn, gan ddylunio trwy raglenni megis; SketchUp, Rhino, a Photoshop. Rwy’n dechrau ar y turn, gan durnio ffurfiau o flociau silindraidd, wedyn rwy’n defnyddio nifer o ddulliau i greu mowldiau a all gynhyrchu ffurfiau lluosog ar ôl eu cwblhau. Mae hyn yn arwain at ganlyniad cydlynus sy’n gyflawnedig, yn esthetig ac yn synhwyraidd. Trwyddi draw, yn cyfuno prosesau digidol modern â chysylltiad diriaethol â’r gwaith llaw.
