Many people think of plastic as utilitarian, used to package food, and other products then thrown away. How could it be used for art? It has been my goal to explore the applications of different types of plastics in an artistic context, particularly in lighting.

“Imitation materials have always indicated pretention.” –Barthes, 1957
While plastic is very versatile in its ability to look like anything, it can also simply look like itself. I wish to defend the reputation of this material, and show the world that plastic can stand on the same stage as ceramic and wood and be beautiful. The fluid-solid nature of acrylic when thermoforming is a delight to play with, and allows for a wide range of forms and textures. Angelina fibres, my other material of choice, catches the light in tiny strands, creating glimmering iridescent surfaces. Despite the material’s artificial origins, many inspirations for my work are taken from nature, and reference or resemble plant life. I choose colour palettes for my work that are not commonly found in the real world; iridescent colour shifting and fluorescent glowing materials which highlight the non-organic nature of the work, a direct contrast to the subject matter they are being used to portray. The light projects radiant shadows onto the surrounding area, transforming the space into a dreamy wonderland.

As an avid lover of fantasy worlds, my hope is that these works capture something of the otherworldly, the ethereal, and can bring this element of whimsy into your work or living space.

Bydd llawer o bobl yn synied am blastig yn beth defnyddiol, a gaiff ei ddefnyddio i becynnu bwyd a chynhyrchion eraill cyn cael ei daflu i ffwrdd. Sut gallai gael ei ddefnyddio ar gyfer celf? Fy nod oedd archwilio’r defnydd ar fathau gwahanol o blastig mewn cyswllt artistig, yn enwedig o ran golau.

“Imitation materials have always indicated pretention.” –Barthes, 1957
Mae plastig yn amlbwrpas gan ei fod yn gallu edrych fel unrhyw beth, gall hefyd edrych yn syml fel ef ei hun. Rwy’n dymuno amddiffyn enw da’r deunydd yma a dangos i’r byd y gall plastig sefyll ar yr un llwyfan â cheramig a phren a bod yn hardd. Mae natur hylif-solid acrylig pan fydd yn thermoffurfio yn bleser pur i chwarae â fe, ac mae’n galluogi ystod eang o ffurfiau a gweadeddau. Mae ffibrau Angelina, y deunydd arall a ddewisais, yn dal y golau mewn mân linynnau, gan greu arwynebau symudliw pefriol. Er mai deunydd artiffisial yw plastig, eto i gyd daw llawer enghraifft a wnaeth ysbrydoli fy ngwaith o fyd natur ac maen nhw’n cyfeirio at blanhigion neu’n debyg iddyn nhw. Rwy’n dewis paletau lliw ar gyfer fy ngwaith nas gwelir yn aml yn y byd go iawn; deunyddiau lliwiau symudliw a rhai gloyw fflwroleuol sy’n amlygu natur anorganig y gwaith, sy’n cyferbynnu’n uniongyrchol â’r peth y maen nhw’n cael eu defnyddio i’w bortreadu. Mae’r golau’n taflu cysgodion pelydrol ar yr ardal o gwmpas, gan drawsnewid y gofod yn fyd rhyfeddol, breuddwydiol.

Gan fy mod yn hynod o hoff o fydoedd ffantasi, rwy’n gobeithio y bydd y gweithiau hyn yn dal rhywbeth o’r arallfydol, yr etheraidd, ac yn gallu dod â’r elfen fympwyol hon i’ch gweithlu neu i’ch man byw.
