Sculptor & Ceramicist

My sculptures are a direct response to ceramic traditions from the past. By taking inspiration from Western pottery traditions but removing the stable, functional nature of the pots as domestic objects, I hope to draw attention to the unpredictable material qualities of clay. I am fascinated by flux, instability and the tug of war between control and lack of control that permeates our lives. My recent pieces stem from a desire to challenge the linear nature of making and are made through a cyclic process of fracturing and reconstructing the thrown vessel. I intend for them to raise questions about the importance of skill and the role of the potter in today’s society.

I graduated with a BA in Ceramics from Cardiff School of Art and Design in 2019 and was a recipient of the Potclays Award for Innovations in Clay. I was a student demonstrator at the 2019 International Ceramics Festival in Aberystwyth and have exhibited in both the UK and Sweden. I was recently shortlisted for the fifth edition of the Young Masters Maylis Grand Ceramics Prize and in 2020 received funding from Aberystwyth Arts Centre’s Incubator project to create a new body of work. I currently live and work in Gwynedd.

Mae fy ngherfluniau yn ymateb uniongyrchol i draddodiadau cerameg o’r gorffennol. Trwy gymryd ysbrydoliaeth o draddodiadau crochenwaith y Gorllewin ond cael gwared ar natur sefydlog, swyddogaethol y potiau fel gwrthrychau domestig, gobeithiaf dynnu sylw at rinweddau deunydd anrhagweladwy clai. Rwy’n cael fy swyno gan lif, ansefydlogrwydd a’r gwrthdynnu rhwng rheolaeth a diffyg rheolaeth sy’n treiddio trwy ein bywydau. Mae fy narnau diweddar yn deillio o awydd i herio natur linellol gwneud ac fe’u gwneir trwy broses gylchol o dorri ac ailadeiladu’r llestr tafledig. Fy mwriad yw eu bod yn codi cwestiynau am bwysigrwydd sgil a rôl y crochenydd yng nghymdeithas heddiw.

Graddiais gyda BA mewn Cerameg o Ysgol Gelf a Dylunio Caerdydd yn 2019 ac roeddwn wedi derbyn Gwobr Potclays am Arloesi mewn Clai. Roeddwn yn arddangoswr myfyrwyr yng Ngŵyl Cerameg Ryngwladol 2019 yn Aberystwyth ac rwyf wedi arddangos yn y DU a Sweden. Yn ddiweddar, cyrhaeddais y rhestr fer ar gyfer pumed rhifyn Gwobr Cerameg Young Masters Maylis Grand ac yn 2020 cefais gyllid gan brosiect Deorfa Canolfan Gelf Aberystwyth i greu corff newydd o waith. Ar hyn o bryd rwy’n byw ac yn gweithio yng Ngwynedd.
