Ella Taylor

BA (Hons) Artist Designer Maker

I am a maker that works with wood and ceramics. For this collection I have created pendant lights and table lamps. These products are presented as exclusive decorative pieces but are also entirely functional. I show the natural beauty of wood by enhancing its grain with finishes and by using light to enhance the design, similarly my ceramic pieces use light to reveal the characteristics of the material.

The wooden lampshade elements have been turned on a lathe to create the shape and finish, while all of the thinner waves of wood are created using veneer in the lamination process. I have also incorporated techniques such as gilding with copper leaf to enhance the cast of the light. The lampshades of the three table lamps are made from recycled wire mesh and the bases have been adapted waste wood that would otherwise have been discarded.

My ceramic pieces are created using porcelain slip in a casting method, they have then been fired without a glaze. These were created as a series playing with the rule of three, all with a different ceramic technique. The decoration around the ceramic is made using a laser cutter which combines both the wood and ceramic in to one object.

Light is powerful and the way in which we use it in our houses should be celebrated with innovative design instead of mass-produced products. I aim to shine a light on the beauty of natural materials.

Gwneuthurwraig sy’n gweithio gyda phren a cerameg ydw i. Ar gyfer y casgliad hwn rwyf wedi creu goleuadau crog a lampau bwrdd. Cyflwynir y cynnyrch yma fel darnau addurniadol unigryw ond maen nhw hefyd yn hollol weithredol. Rwy’n dangos harddwch naturiol pren drwy harddu’r graen â gorffeniadau a thrwy ddefnyddio golau i gyfoethogi’r cynllun, yn yr un modd mae fy narnau cerameg yn defnyddio golau i ddatgelu nodweddion y deunydd.

Mae elfennau pren cysgodion lamp wedi’u turnio i greu’r siâp a’r gorffeniad, a’r holl donnau pren teneuach wedi’u creu drwy ddefnyddio argaenau yn y broses lamineiddio. Rwy wedi ymgorffori technegau megis euro â dail copr i gyfoethogi adlewyrchiad y golau. Mae cysgodion golau’r tair lamp fwrdd wedi’u creu o rwyll wifrog wedi’i ailgylchu a’r sylfaen wedi’i addasu o bren gwastraff a fyddai wedi’i daflu i ffwrdd fel arall.

Mae fy narnau cerameg wedi’u creu drwy ddefnyddio slip porslen mewn dull castio, a’u tanio heb wydredd. Cafodd y rhain eu creu fel cyfres yn chwarae â’r rheol o dri, bob un â thechneg cerameg wahanol. Mae’r addurn o gwmpas y cerameg wedi’i greu drwy ddefnyddio torrwr laser sy’n cyfuno pren a cerameg yn un gwrthrych.

Mae golau’n bwerus a dylid dathlu’r modd yr ydym yn ei ddefnyddio yn ein cartrefi â chynlluniau arloesol yn hytrach na chynnyrch sydd wedi’i fasgynhyrchu. Fy nod yw taflu goleuni ar harddwch deunyddiau naturiol.
