CYM (Cyan, Yellow, Magenta)
This piece started with an interest in how the eye sees colour and how the human eye makes sense of the world around us. There are many things that the human eye has learnt to do over time through evolution that show the development of how it has adapted to see colour for survival and understanding. Even in our own lifetime from infancy to adulthood we learn the illusions of colour to better understand the world.
One optical phenomenon the piece CYM explores in particular is how the eye ‘fills in’ colour where there is none. Have you ever looked at a light for a bit too long and seen a black spot in your vision for a short while after? The dot is something your eye creates in contrast with the bright light to correct vision.
Alongside this interest in optics, artists such as Dan Flavin, James Turrell and David Batchelor have been influential and important to creating a connection between light and art. The use of light allows colour to spill out form its container creating an interactive environment, casting Cyan, Yellow and Magenta shadows for the audience to interact with.
