Gwenllian Llwyd

BA (Hons) Fine Art

In 1982 my Mum gave birth to a little boy called Owain Rhun Llwyd. At 4 months old, he was diagnosed with serious brain damage. He died just before turning 4 years old. During his short life, women from the local Welsh speaking community in Talgarreg decided to provide practical support for my parents. A rota was set-up whereby local women would volunteer to help my mother for 4 mornings a week.

In my recent practice, I consider the important contribution to domestic and social life made by women in Welsh speaking communities. In this film, I draw on the continuity of support in Welsh rural culture as a means of identifying the specific role played by women.

For this work I have collaborated with a group of women from Talgarreg through a series of the participatory workshops based on the communal activity of making ‘cawl’. Through this performative engagements I seek to honour and sustain a shared consciousness shaped by common experiences of life and labour. I have used archival audio about the women of Talgarreg from a 1985 Radio Cymru, ‘Stondin Sulwyn’ documentary to emphasise and contextualise the work of preparing ‘Noson Cawl a Chân’.

Preparing and creating this film installation is a way of thanking the community for their kindness and help, and to draw the attention the importance of community as a means for mutual support as illustrated by the women in the village of Talgarreg.

Yn 1982 ganwyd bachgen bach i Mam, Owain Rhun Llwyd. Pan oedd yn 4 mis oed, cafodd ddiagnosis o niwed difrifol i’w ymennydd. Bu farw ychydig cyn iddo gyrraedd ei ben-blwydd yn 4 oed. Yn ystod ei fywyd byr, penderfynodd menywod o Dalgarreg, cymuned leol Gymraeg ei hiaith, roi cymorth ymarferol i’m rhieni. Sefydlwyd rota lle y byddai menywod lleol yn gwirfoddoli i helpu fy mam bedwar bore’r wythnos.

Yn fy ymarfer diweddar, rwyf yn ystyried y cyfraniad pwysig i fywydau cartrefi ac i’n bywyd cymdeithasol a wneir gan fenywod mewn cymunedau Cymraeg eu hiaith. Yn y ffilm hon, rwy’n defnyddio’r cymorth sy’n parhau yn y diwylliant yng nghefn gwlad Cymru yn fodd i adnabod y rôl benodol sydd gan fenywod.

Ar gyfer y gwaith hwn, bûm yn cydweithio gyda grŵp o fenywod o Dalgarreg drwy gyfres o weithdai cyfranogol a oedd yn seiliedig ar weithgaredd cymunedol sef gwneud cawl. Drwy’r ymgysylltiad â’r gwaith hwn, rwyf yn ceisio anrhydeddu a chynnal ymwybod a rennir sydd wedi’i siapio drwy fod â’r un profiadau o lafur byw. Rwyf wedi defnyddio recordiau sain o’r archifau am fenywod Talgarreg o raglen ‘Stondin Sulwyn’ ar Radio Cymru yn 1985 i bwysleisio ac i roi cyd-destun i waith paratoi Noson Cawl a Chân.

Mae paratoi a chreu’r ffilm hon yn ffordd i ddiolch i’r gymuned am eu caredigrwydd a’u cymorth, ac i alw sylw at bwysigrwydd cymuned yn fodd i gynnig cefnogaeth i’n gilydd fel y dangosodd y menywod ym mhentref Talgarreg.
