Witch & Wiccan
My project is based on witches and Wiccans and their craft. The purpose of my project is to demonstrate through my paintings the representations of how they are stereotyped, and the reality of the subject is depicted through the form of photography.
A witch is a person who takes part in the art of witchcraft. The term witchcraft derives from the word ‘weik’ meaning magic or religion. The verb Wiccan means to work with sorcery, cast spells, and to be a witch. Wicca is the old English term for a witch first appearing in documentation in the ninth century to identify a sorcerer. Wiccan is the plural of the noun Wicca, meaning a person who follows the religion of Wicca.
A witch uses magic known as witchcraft, using the energy of the universe, nature and elements, to achieve their goal. Anyone of any religion can be a witch, a Wiccan can also be a witch or call themselves witches.
A Wiccan follows the religious form of Witchcraft, Wicca. The worship of the earth and ceremonial magic. Although Wiccans sometimes call themselves witches, using witchcraft is not necessary. Many choose magic, religion and follow the cycle of the seasons and nature.
With this being said, both witch and Wiccan are under the same umbrella, both have similarities and differences. There are no strict rules that a person has to strictly follow in their path, though they may wish to follow the traditions continued from centuries to this modern era.
