Playing Mamam
The struggle of being a Mother and Artist is undeniably tense. My interest lies in the dynamism of this relationship and how I can utilise my position to create. My work became a dialogue between artist mother and children. A mother teaches her children, but mine evidently teach me. I began documenting the explorative nature of infantile expression to influence my own painting; to help liberate the tension that adulthood and maternalism creates. Painting and drawing seemed the only mediums that could express the immediacy of the juxtaposition between the innocence, primitivism and the sentimentality of maternalism; through the fluidity of unconscious mark making, engaging with the materials, essentially playing.
