Hiraeth

Last year marked the 50th anniversary of the drowning of the Welsh valley of Tryweryn in order to supply water to the city of Liverpool. This was a turning point in the political landscape of Wales and a wakeup call for many Welshmen and women.

I was initially inspired by the headlines of newspaper cuttings of the time and an iconic poem ‘Colli Iaith’. ‘Hiraeth’ – translated as loss or longing – features prominently in the poem. My project developed using this word and words from the headlines as a focal point to my paintings. The project reached a conclusion with a video installation piece set in the spectacular yet haunting landscape that motivated my work.

Mae’r gair ‘Hiraeth’ yn y Gymraeg wedi bod yn sbardun i’m gwaith diweddar ac wedi fy nhywys tuag at ddigwyddiad sydd yn agos iawn at fy nghalon, sef trychineb Tryweryn a boddi’r gymdeithas o amgylch Capel Celyn. Taniodd yr anghyfiawnder yma deimladau cryf o genedlaetholdeb ymysg Cymry y cyfnod, ac mae rhywbeth yno wedi fy nhanio i hefyd.

Daeth y sbardun gwreiddiol i’m paentiadau wrth i mi ddarllen penawdau papurau newydd o’r cyfnod a’r gerdd eiconig Colli Iaith – lle mae’r gair ‘Hiraeth’ yn amlwg iawn drwyddi. Ymchwiliais ymhellach gan ddefnyddio y geiriau o’r papur newydd yn fy mhaentiadau. Daeth fy nghywaith i uwchafbwynt gyda’r ffilm sydd yn crynhoi yr holl emosiwn a deimlais wrth i mi ymweld ar tirlun hudolus hwn a ysbrydolodd fy ngwaith.
