Britannia Quay Arts Centre

The brief was to design an exciting new waterside Arts Centre on a vacant site in Cardiff Bay.

There were no specific requirements for the design although we were given ideas of what to include. These included a theatre/cinema, restaurant and workshop spaces.

The proposed site overlooks Roath Basin and is neighboured between two office buildings. These buildings are 5 and 6 storeys high. At the back of the site there is the Welsh Assembly Government building, therefore it was important for the Art Centre to stand out in its surroundings.

The layout of the building is mainly open plan in public areas and closed rooms for staff, the teaching areas and for the theatre. The Art Centre is constructed from steel frame with fibre cement cladding on the external walls. The front of the building is at different levels and has a curtain wall facade.
