Within Skin
During my exploration into perception of space, I have examined certain psychoanalytical theories that attempt to account for the effect of art on our unconscious, in particular the possibility of art transforming familiar, fixed knowledge of our bodies.
The re-introduction to flesh as an ‘object’ responsive to space and architecture causes us to reassess our prior experience. What initially might have caused us to recoil if found on our own bodies now creates intrigue, curiosity and humor as we are prompted to get to know it in a different way.
This exhibition of work uses skin as a point of discussion but poses the larger question: can an artwork expose the beauty in what was previously found gruesome or ugly?
