Coercive control is the foundation on which domestic abuse is built and is the micromanagement of a victims life. Domestic abuse isn’t just acts of violence, it is acts of control, it is where domestic abuse starts and escalates. Living with an abusive partner or relative that controls every aspect of your life, who you talk to, what you do socially, how you perform sexually and everything else in between, is mentally damaging, leaving most victims of coercive control abuse with PTSD.

Post traumatic stress disorder is a mental health illness that occurs when someone has been exposed to a traumatic event, but in the case of a domestic abuse victim, the traumatic event is constant reoccurring abuse. Domestic abuse victims who suffer with PTSD often struggle with flashbacks, nightmares, depression, anxiety and are often triggered.

My goal as an artist is to use my work to show people the effects of domestic abuse on a victim and to remind viewers that domestic abuse isn’t always physical. Family Portrait is a video installation that documents my recovery after my PTSD diagnosis due to abuse inflicted on my family. My immediate, diary style videos capture me in all stages of my recovery and is the most honest and exposed portrait of myself to date. The viewer finds themselves immersed not only in my recovery, but also confronted with abusive triggers that have effected my progress along the way.

Rheolaeth trwy orfodi yw’r sylfaen y mae cam-drin domestig wedi’i adeiladu arno ac mae’n micro-reoli bywyd dioddefwr. Nid gweithredoedd treisiol yn unig yw cam-drin domestig, ond mewn gweithredoedd o reoli y bydd cam-drin domestig yn dechrau ac yn cynyddu. Mae byw gyda phartner sy’n cam-drin neu berthynas a fydd yn rheoli pob rhan o’ch bywyd, â phwy y byddwch yn siarad, beth wnewch chi’n gymdeithasol, sut byddwch yn perfformio’n rhywiol a phopeth arall, yn niweidiol i’r meddwl gan adael y rhan fwyaf o ddioddefwyr sy’n cael eu cam-drin gan reolaeth trwy orfodi â PTSD (Anhwylder Straen Wedi Trawma).

Mae anhwylder straen wedi trawma yn salwch iechyd meddwl a fydd yn digwydd pan fydd rhywbeth trawmatig wedi digwydd i rywun ond yn achos cam-drin domestig, mae’r digwyddiad trawmatig yn gam-drin cyson sy’n digwydd dro ar ôl tro. Bydd dioddefwyr cam-drin domestig a fydd yn dioddef â PTSD yn aml yn gorfod brwydro ag ôl-fflachiau, hunllefau, iselder ysbryd, a phryder.

Fy nod fel artist yw defnyddio fy ngwaith i ddangos i bobl effeithiau cam-drin domestig ar y dioddefwr ac i atgoffa pobl nad yw cam-drin domestig bob amser yn beth corfforol. Mae Family Portrait yn fideo sy’n dangos sut y gwnes i wella wedi diagnosis PTSD oherwydd y cam-drin a achoswyd i’m teulu. Mae’r fideos ar ddull dyddiadur yn fy nal ym mhob cyfnod o’m gwellhad a dyma’r hunan-bortread mwyaf gonest ac agored ohonof i fy hun hyd yma. Bydd y gwylwyr yn cael eu hunain yn rhan o’m gwellhad ond hefyd yn dod ar draws sbardunau camdriniol sydd wedi effeithio ar fy nghynnydd ar hyd y ffordd.
