Depicting Consciousness

My art practice is informed by a number of questions such as those involving the problems of consciousness as well as the boundaries that exist between us and the world. For our world to come into existence, two distinct forms are required to experience reality and for this reality to take a form. For us as a conscious observer we are able to experience the world that we are born from and irrefutably connected to. Physical barriers like the skin or the limited sensory perceptions between the self and the environment provide the illusion of dualism and of being separate from the world. Without these boundaries we would simply exist as one indistinguishable collective.

In complete contrast to the third person approach to consciousness taken within scientific fields, as an artist my work utilises the direct connection I have with the surrounding world. My current work explores the relationship between the internal and the external, or the mind and the shared world. As an artist I can use empirical and embodied knowledge to understand the world. My hand is used to branch out into a physical space, to both create and experience feedback between myself and the world.
