Hybrid Furniture

Wood and ceramic have been the material focus of much of my work. My latest project explores material hybridity in furniture, incorporating ceramics and metal as visual elements within hardwood pieces.

The coffee table incorporates dovetailed metal sections joined through the process of pouring metal alloy directly onto wood. The texture of bark is captured along the edge, taken from the wood used to make the piece and so alluding to its original state. The adjoining wood and metal draws attention to their contrasting material properties.

The bedside table juxtaposes the inherent qualities of strength and fragility in wood and ceramic respectively. The traditional association of ceramics with tableware is subverted by using it as a structural component in the form of a drawer front.

  • Coffee Table: wood, metal alloy
  • Bedside Table: wood, ceramic
