Laura Welsman

BA (Hons) Fine Art

My artwork is focused around the creation of new subjective realities from external stimuli such as books and films, combined with fragments of dreams, memories and meditations on the subconscious. Reading into psychoanalytical case studies of Laing, Jung and Freud as well as the esoteric and accounts of altered states of mind has been the foundation of bringing a new unstable, alternative reality into tangible, physical form. In order to translate my own ethereal narratives into paint I chose to reduce specific components to their core symbolic forms; describing the idea as an object, emerging from a chaotic ether of bold, present brush strokes, and the object as an idea through ambiguity. Through study of Makiko Kudo and Peter Doig in particular, I have been experimenting with oil paint to a point wherein i have developed my own visual language which continues to change with the complexity of the new reality I am describing.

I aim to spark a cognitive debate within the observer through the frustration of wanting to know the story with no answer, and the pull of staring a moment longer. Enticing their voyeuristic tendencies of taking a second glance through the window to the lit interior...
