Super Fanny

Lucie Alexander is a young artist who explores the ideas of feminism in her conceptual and performative artwork, focusing on the relevance of feminism in the twenty-first century. Strong feminist influences throughout her life have led her to make work based upon the principles of feminism within society, investigating issues such as everyday sexism and gender stereotyping within the media. To promote these feminist ideals and make them more accessible to the public, she approaches her work with humour, and through the use of satire, creating the alternative superhero persona ‘Super Fanny’; a characterisation of a set of feminist ideals.

Artists such as Sarah Lucas and Marina Abramovic influence Alexander’s work. With origins in painting, Alexander moved into performance-based work, using hand-made piñatas as emblems of the struggles of women, leading to her video performance ‘Bollocks to the Patriarchy’.

The superhero persona ‘Super Fanny’ is Alexander’s most recent incarnation of feminist artwork, and uses film and photography to document the performances. By walking through the streets and handing out ‘Super Fanny’ business cards to members of society, Alexander aims to promote feminism publicly and to highlight the importance of feminism in the twenty-first century. As a fine art practitioner, Alexander’s work is still in the developmental stage as a work in progress, as she further investigates the iconography and psychology of the superhero.
