Mary Chandaman

BA (Hons) Fashion Design

I’m an aspiring fashion activist and expressive artist mainly focusing on conceptual concepts within my work. Designing for everyone: menswear, womenswear and unisex clothing. I like to focus on designs that embody an abstract technique. I’m often drawn to bright/primary colours in my work as my work is visually loud and bold and finding primary colours gives my work that ‘pop’ and therefore create an eye drawn effect. I am always looking at fashion from a fresh fashion forward perspective. Underlying theme of expression through my designs and garments are expressing a deeper meaning than the clothing simply looking pretty or just covering the body.

My concept for my Major fashion project is titled ‘Cutting Shapes’ this entails the use of movement and dance to be used as the main focus as this is a strong passion of the way I express myself. Looking at exploring the boundaries of freedom and restriction. Creating a unique way of pattern cutting by using the negative space of my dance movements to create my second look. My muse is based on myself where I look into a personal way of relating movement in the print by using my body as a paint brush to make the print personal and show identity through the print.

Another underlying concept is looking at ‘hidden identity’ so the main focus is on the movement of the garment and the print being used as an expression of self and when adding a hood gives the viewer an uncomfortable feeling however I feel this give my work a different perspective.

Rwy’n ymgyrchydd ffasiwn uchelgeisiol ac yn artist mynegiadol sy’n canolbwyntio’n bennaf ar gysyniadau cysyniadol yn fy ngwaith. Cynllunio ar gyfer pawb: dillad dynion, dillad merched a dillad neillryw. Rwy’n hoffi canolbwyntio ar gynlluniau sy’n ymgorffori techneg haniaethol. Rwy’n cael fy nenu’n aml at liwiau llachar/cynradd yn fy ngwaith am fod fy ngwaith yn weledol feiddgar ac mae canfod lliwiau cynradd yn rhoi ‘pop’ i’r gwaith ac felly’n creu effaith sy’n denu’r llygad. Rwyf bob amser yn edrych ar ffasiwn o safbwynt ffasiwn blaengar. Thema fynegiadol waelodol drwy fy nyluniadau a’m dillad yw mynegi ystyr ddyfnach na bod y dillad ond yn edrych yn bert neu ond yn gorchuddio’r corff.

Teitl fy nghysyniad ar gyfer fy mhrosiect ffasiwn Mawr yw ‘Cutting Shapes’ sy’n ymwneud â’r defnydd o ddawns fel prif ffocws am fod hynny’n rhywbeth rwy’n angerddol amdano o safbwynt y modd rwy’n mynegi fy hun. Edrych ar archwilio ffiniau rhyddid a chyfyngiadau. Creu ffordd unigryw o dorri patrymau drwy ddefnyddio gofod negyddol fy symudiadau dawns i greu fy ail edrychiad. Mae fy myfyrdod yn seiliedig arna i fy hun ac rwy’n edrych ar ffordd bersonol o gysylltu symudiad yn y print drwy ddefnyddio fy nghorff fel brwsh paent i wneud y print yn bersonol a dangos hunaniaeth drwy’r print.
Cysyniad sylfaenol arall yw edrych ar ‘hunaniaeth gudd’ felly mae’r prif ffocws ar symudiad y dilledyn a defnyddio’r print fel mynegiant o’r hunan ac wrth ychwanegu cwfl gwna hyn i’r gwyliwr deimlo’n anghysurus ond rwy’n teimlo bod hyn yn rhoi persbectif gwahanol i’m gwaith.
