‘Like Salmon’ is a contemporary sculpture collection on the theme of nostalgia and longing. The pieces are displayed in the format of a Wunderkammer – making a museum of my own memories. The contents of each vitrine refer to a particular memory from my family’s decades of holidays to the beautiful far west of Cornwall – from lazy, baking days spent on the beach to evenings getting combed for nits in the tent. This beautiful, wild corner of the world is hugely important to us- we long to return and revisit our kind, familiar places, to bring our loved ones here, and create new memories where old ones were made. This collection was made in a state of such longing and revisits and transmutes my recollections into a collection of material, tangible objects that can be shared and distributed to those I care about most. Family has always been a foundation in my life, but never more so than in the past few years- when I have moved away from the cradle of my upbringing and faced new and unexpected challenges and I want this work to be a celebration of that fact.

I am fascinated by the power of handmade objects to carry deep meaning and convey narratives through their relationships with history, places, and people. In this, the role of craft skill cannot be understated – cultivating a wide range of skills in various materials allows me to approach projects by selecting the material that will best embody a concept.

Casgliad o gerfluniau cyfoes ar thema nostalgia a hiraeth yw ‘Like Salmon’. Caiff y darnau eu harddangos ar fformat Wunerkammer – gan greu amgueddfa o fy atgofion fy hun. Mae cynnwys pob gwydryn yn cyfeirio at atgof penodol o’r degawdau o wyliau fy nheulu i harddwch gorllewin Cernyw – o ddyddiau dioglyd, poeth a dreuliwyd ar y traeth i nosweithiau’n cribo am chwain yn y babell. Mae’r cornel hardd, gwyllt yma o’r byd yn hynod bwysig i ni – rydym yn dyheu i ddychwelyd ac ailymweld â’n llefydd caredig, cyfarwydd, i ddod â’n hanwyliaid yma, a chreu atgofion newydd lle crëwyd hen rai. Lluniwyd y casgliad hwn mewn cyflwr mor hiraethus, ac mae’n ailymweld ac yn trawsnewid fy atgofion yn gasgliad o wrthrychau materol, diriaethol y gellir eu rhannu a’u dosbarthu i’r rhai rwy’n eu caru fwyaf. Teulu fu sylfaen fy mywyd erioed, ac yn fwy felly yn ystod y blynyddoedd diweddar – wrth i mi symud i ffwrdd oddi wrth grud fy magwraeth ac wynebu heriau newydd ac annisgwyl a hoffwn i’r gwaith yma fod yn ddathliad o’r ffaith honno.

Rwy’n rhyfeddu at rym gwrthrychau a wnaed â llaw i gynnal ystyr ddofn a chyfleu naratif drwy eu perthynas â hanes, llefydd, a phobl. Yn hyn o beth, ni ellir tanddatgan sgil crefft – mae meithrin amrywiaeth eang o sgiliau mewn gwahanol ddeunyddiau yn rhoi cyfle i mi fynd i’r afael â phrosiectau drwy ddewis y deunydd a fydd yn ymgorffori’r cysyniad orau.
