Exploring the unseen within plants: an interpretation of the complex detail that constitutes the superficial.

When we see things, we only look at the surface layer that is visible to the eye and don’t tend to consider anything deeper. My work explores the hidden layers of plants to expose the natural beauty within by magnifying the intricate cross-sections found in nature, with every individual cell having a purpose building up to what we see and determining the external, dynamic form.

I focused on interrogating the different forms of cell structures, and further developing patterns that occur within the cross-section naturally. It is, therefore, an interpretation of the unseen layers within plants.

I explore this through painting as well as fabric work, allowing a subtly divergent approach. While my fabric piece merges the delicate nature of a cross-section with the simplicity of the individual cells that constitute them, my painting looks in more detail into the naturally occurring patterns, making up a cellular city that looks unearthly, and unidentifiable to the superficial external form.

Archwilio’r hyn nad yw’n cael ei weld o fewn planhigion: dehongliad o’r manylion cymhleth sy’n ffurfio’r arwynebol.

Pan fyddwn ni’n gweld pethau, dim ond ar yr haen uchaf sy’n weladwy i’r llygad rydyn ni’n edrych, a dydyn ni ddim yn tueddu i ystyried unrhyw beth dyfnach. Mae fy ngwaith i’n archwilio haenau cudd planhigion i ddatgelu’r harddwch naturiol oddi mewn iddyn nhw, drwy chwyddo’r trawstoriadau cymhleth a geir ym myd natur; mae pwrpas gan bob cell unigol, a hynny sy’n sy’n arwain at yr hyn a welwn ac yn penderfynu ar y ffurf ddeinamig allanol.

Canolbwyntiais ar archwilio’r strwythurau celloedd gwahanol, ac ar ddatblygu ymhellach y patrymau hynny sy’n digwydd yn naturiol yn y trawstoriad. O ganlyniad, mae’n ddehongliad o’r haenau anweledig oddi mewn i blanhigion.

Rwy’n archwilio hyn drwy beintio yn ogystal â gwaith ffabrig, gan ganiatáu dull dargyfeiriol cynnil. Tra bod fy narn ffabrig yn uno natur gain trawstoriad â symlrwydd y celloedd unigol sy’n ei ffurfio, mae fy mhaentiad yn edrych yn fanylach ar y patrymau sy’n digwydd yn naturiol, gan ffurfio dinas gellog sy’n edrych yn annaearol, a heb unrhyw gysylltiad ymddangosiadol â’r ffurf allanol arwynebol.

My artwork was initially inspired by the rave scene which is usually an intense environment of music, colour and lights. I decided to recreate the feelings that my experience evoked, with the use of illuminative acrylics and spray paints on canvas. As spray painting...

Our species has become increasingly disconnected from nature. I focus on landscapes of personal significance and/or landscapes that have been disrupted by industrial use. Materials from these sites (often rocks, muds, and bricks) are used through a process-orientated...

Non-linear narratives such as unreliable memories, leaky dreams and deja vu are a central reference within my practice. I address the structure of these forms of narrative using repetition, replication and iterations of time. My work is largely sculptural, using...

Exploring the fragmentation of memory through the physicality of found objects and the spoken word, my work has become an archive of my family history. Due to the archival nature of my work, I replicate ways of preserving my objects through the attentiveness of their...

In my current practice I am concerned with the objectivity and phenomenology of colour. Through using media such as light and coloured acetate, my present work is intentionally focused and uncluttered, allowing colour to be considered as a singularity without any...

With a love for colour my work addresses form and shape and the impact this has on a space. I am demonstrating how the use of bright colour can create maximum optical impact. I’m interested in pattern and repetition to create a visual aesthetic whilst whilst working...
