Nathan Vaughan

BA (Hons) Artist Designer Maker

My design ethos is guided by ethical and ecologically sustainable practices. By sourcing natural materials geographically close to my home and working with local craftsmen to produce furniture and lighting that is designed in contrast to the current system of mass manufacture and throwaway culture. Hand crafted objects are important to achieving a sustainable future.
Localism is key to the sustainable elements of my work and underpins my practice. I use hand crafted techniques along with bespoke handmade machines that help me create my furniture and lighting at a local level rather than seek outside help from large manufacturers.

My current body of work is a range of lighting and furniture made with British hardwoods, Anglesey Limestone, reclaimed materials, and mixed media. By exploiting the dichotomy between materials and surface texture, I have created a series of intriguing objects that are hard to ignore but are visually harmonious. My furniture and lighting is presented as a hybrid of luxury and sustainable objects as they eschew rare materials normally associated with luxury items that are ecologically damaging but the craftmanship involved in making the objects with local and recycled materials still allows them to be viewed & regarded as high value objects.

Arferion sy’n foesegol ac yn economaidd gynaliadwy sy’n arwain fy ethos dylunio. Drwy gael deunyddiau naturiol sy’n agos yn ddaearyddol i’m cartref a thrwy weithio gyda chrefftwyr lleol i gael cynhyrchu celfi a goleuadau sydd wedi’u dylunio i gyferbynnu â’r system weithgynhyrchu dorfol a’r diwylliant taflu-i-ffwrdd presennol. Mae gwrthrychau a wneir â’r llaw yn bwysig ar gyfer dyfodol cynaliadwy.
Mae cadw pethau’n lleol yn allweddol i elfennau cynaliadwy o’m gwaith ac mae’n sail i’m hymarfer. Rwyf yn defnyddio technegau sy’n defnyddio’r llaw ynghyd â pheiriannau penodol a wnaed â’r llaw sy’n fy helpu i greu fy nghelfi a’m goleuadau ar lefel leol yn hytrach na chwilio am gymorth o’r tu allan oddi wrth weithgynhyrchwyr mawr.

Mae fy ngwaith presennol yn gyfres o oleuadau a chelfi wedi’u gwneud â phrennau caled o Brydain, Carreg Galch Môn, deunyddiau wedi’u hadennill, a chyfryngau cymysg. Drwy ymelwa ar y dicotomi rhwng deunyddiau a gweadedd arwynebau, rwyf wedi creu cyfres o wrthrychau diddorol sy’n anodd eu hanwybyddu ond sy’n cydgordio yn weledol. Mae fy nghelfi a’m goleuadau wedi’u cyflwyno yn hybrid o wrthrychau moethus a chynaliadwy wrth iddyn nhw osgoi deunyddiau crai sy’n cael eu cysylltu fel arfer ag eitemau moethus, sy’n niweidiol yn ecolegol ond mae’r crefftwaith sy’n gyfrifol am wneud y gwrthrychau gyda deunyddiau lleol a rhai wedi’u hadennill yn parhau i ganiatáu iddyn nhw gael eu gweld a’u hystyried yn wrthrychau uchel eu gwerth.
