Not Permanent, Not Permanent: Living in Collapsible Society
I explore our cities and steal shapes and lines to create a city that is joyous yet irrational. We live in a society that changes so fast I have to alter what I see. I reject the fundamentals of city life such as people, transport and traditional colours in favour of the absurd. I create houses without doors and lighthouses that won’t stand up to suggest the instability of the world. I hope to encourage the thought that although we believe the things we surround ourselves with are permanent, in reality they are not. My chaotic city might nevertheless somehow exist within the world’s instability. I make paintings where people can recognise the shapes from their daily lives but cannot place themselves within the imaginary landscapes. The city I have built is unsustainable and awkward, yet the playful way it has been constructed is grotesquely charming. Our world is so full of uncertainty that we need the fictional to understand it.
