BA (Hons) Ceramics

My work expresses the personal: the highs and lows of the lived experience, illustrated through an enlivening combination of colour and pattern, figuration and abstraction. It aims to shake up the visual plane and challenge people’s perception of the ordinary. Through the assemblage of ceramics I intend to entice people in, inviting them to unmuddle the muddled communication of images. By presenting a hybrid of joy and dark humour I intend to connect with audiences, strike resonance and resemblance to emotions, memories and shared experiences.

The sense of the liminal: the in-between, is captured in my felicitous approach to making. It is often spontaneous, embracing of the accidental yet conscious of the indexical marks made by clay. My dialect is one of opposites, shifting between 2D and 3D, positive and negative, linear and block, yet always with an aim to create narrative. To imitate the human experience, I draw from the figure and the wealth of language held within it – providing just enough familiarity before playfully shifting to the unknown.

By operating in the realm of 3D collage my work embodies a sense of flux, and allows me to respond intuitively to the space in which the work is shown. My ever-changing compositions are held together with a hand-painted surface, that shines, tempts touch and toys with traditional associations of ceramics. Through my work I seek a quality of feeling which titters on the edge of that which is beautiful yet disturbing.

Mae fy ngwaith yn mynegi’r personol: dedwyddwch a dolur profiad byw, wedi’u darlunio trwy gyfuniad bywiog o liw a phatrwm, arddangosiad a haniaeth. Ei nod yw ysgwyd yr haen weledol a herio canfyddiad pobl o’r cyffredin. Trwy gynnull cerameg fy mwriad yw denu pobl i mewn, eu gwahodd i ddatrys cyfathrebiad cymhleth delweddau. Drwy gyflwyno cyfuniad o lawenydd a hiwmor tywyll rwy’n bwriadu cysylltu â chynulleidfaoedd, taro atsain a chyffelybiaeth ag emosiynau, atgofion a phrofiadau cyffredin.

Mae’r ymdeimlad o bontio: y man yn y canol, yn cael ei gipio yn f’ymagwedd lawen at wneud. Mae’n ddifyfyr yn aml, gan groesawu’r damweiniol ond yn ymwybodol o’r nodau mynegai sy’n cael eu gwneud gan y clai. Mae fy nhafodiaith yn cwmpasu gwrthwynebau, gan newid rhwng 2D a 3D, positif a negyddol, llinol a thalp, ond y nod bob amser yw creu naratif. I efelychu’r profiad dynol, rwy’n tynnu oddi ar y ffigur a chyfoeth yr iaith sy’n cael ei dal ynddo – gan gynnig dim ond digon o’r cyfarwydd cyn newid yn chwareus i’w anhysbys.

Drwy weithredu yn nhiriogaeth gludwaith 3D mae fy ngwaith yn ymgorffori ymdeimlad o newid, ac yn gadael i mi ymateb yn reddfol i’r gofod mae’r gwaith yn cael ei ddangos ynddo. Mae fy nghyfansoddiadau byth-newidiol yn cael eu dal ynghyd ag arwyneb wedi’i baentio â llaw, sy’n disgleirio, yn temptio cyffwrdd ac yn chwarae â chysylltiadau traddodiadol cerameg. Trwy fy ngwaith rwy’n chwilio am ansawdd teimlad sydd ar drothwy’r hyn sy’n brydferth ac eto’n aflonyddol.
