My work is an observational contemplation of human actions and people’s reactions to widespread phenomena such as climate crisis, overpopulation, debauchery and distraction, mass hysteria, and media control and influence. Starting with the question ‘Are We Evil?’ I set out to explore whether human actions and efforts determine if we are inherently evil. This was prompted by the global climate crisis that seemed most prevalent in the media at the time.

The work evolved into a much broader look at humanity. Panic and hysteria are shown prominently in the images, as well as debauchery and selfishness. I ask how these things get in the way of everyday life and the more realistic goals people could be pursuing. I realised the extent to which my work was being directed by events in media: whatever the next big thing was, being told what to panic about next and the associated confusion and over-reliance on media platforms.

Video dominates the world media, making it an effective way to communicate my ideas to more people. Sampling is a key technique for me, as is using archival films, live action TV, and cartoons. I also create my own soundtracks. There is a strong focus on conflicting visual elements held in tension with the audio. Some clips have clear and obvious content; these are juxtaposed with more bizarre imagery, making them appear strange and the bizarre in turn becomes normalised.

Mae fy ngwaith yn fyfyrdod arsylwadol ar weithredoedd dynol ac ymatebion pobl i ffenomenau cyffredinol megis newid yn yr hinsawdd, gorboblogaeth, anlladrwydd a thynnu sylw, hysteria torfol a rheolaeth a dylanwad y cyfryngau. Gan gychwyn gyda’r cwestiwn ‘Ydym ni’n Ddrwg?’ es i ati i archwilio a yw gweithredoedd ac ymdrechion dynol yn esbonio p’un a ydym yn ddrwg yn gynhenid ai beidio. Ysgogwyd hyn gan yr argyfwng hinsawdd fyd-eang a oedd i’w weld yn amlwg yn y cyfryngau ar y pryd.

Esblygodd y gwaith i fwrw golwg llawer ehangach ar ddynoliaeth. Dangosir panig a hysteria’n amlwg yn y delweddau, yn ogystal ag anlladrwydd a hunanoldeb. Rwy’n gofyn sut y gallai’r pethau hyn fod yn rhwystr i fywyd bob dydd a’r nodau mwy realistig y gallai pobl fod yn eu dilyn. Sylweddolais i ba raddau yr oedd fy ngwaith yn cael ei gyfeirio gan ddigwyddiadau yn y cyfryngau: beth bynnag oedd y peth mawr nesaf, yr hyn y dwedir wrthym i gael panig amdano nesaf a’r dryswch a gorddibyniaeth cysylltiedig ar lwyfannau cyfryngau.

Mae fideo’n dominyddu cyfryngau’r byd, gan ei wneud yn ddull effeithiol o gyfathrebu fy syniadau i fwy o bobl. Mae samplu’n dechneg allweddol i mi, fel y mae defnyddio ffilmiau, teledu byw a chartwnau. Rwy’n creu fy nhraciau sain fy hun hefyd. Ceir ffocws cryf ar elfennau gweledol gwrthdrawiadol a ddelir mewn tensiwn â’r sain. Mae gan rai clipiau gynnwys clir ac amlwg; cyferbynnir y rhain gyda delweddaeth fwy bisâr, gan beri iddynt ymddangos yn rhyfedd ac yn ei dro aiff y bisâr wedi’i normaleiddio.
